Lastres Spain great for cheese lovers

The northern coast of Spain has a special place in the heart of cheese lovers. The small region of Asturias is known by some as the country’s Land of Cheese. Here, family farmers practice time-honed techniques to create some of the most unique cheese in the world.

Cabralas cheese is the most famous of the region’s cheeses, and is also considered one of the most unique cheeses anywhere in the world. It is made only in the village of Cabrales and three villages of the Peñamellera Alta township, located in the Picos de Europa Mountains in eastern Asturias. The many caves in these mountains make perfect places for aging the cheese., which is first made by hand with a milk from local cows, goats and sheep.

The best place to stay when visiting cheese country is in one of the many seaside towns nearby. Llanes, Ribadesella and Lastres are all popular resorts and have plenty of places to stay, particularly in the off season for those who are looking for great cheese, though the beaches are very nice as well. The towns all have good cheese shops to find the perfect taste for your palette. In addition to the cheese, there are plenty of other things to do in the region. Nearby is the Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa, with beautiful, rugged scenery and many hiking trails..

The easiest way to get to cheese country is to fly into San Sebastian, which has daily connections through Madrid and other major airport throughout Europe. From there, you can experience the Basque Country before heading west to Asturias and the Land of Cheese.
